CHPG Application

The Community HIV Planning Group (CHPG) works with the Virginia Department of Health to guide HIV Prevention and Care services. CHPG seeks members with diverse professional, educational, and life experience. Federal guidelines encourage the group to reflect the demographics of the HIV epidemic in Virginia. For this reason, the application includes questions of a personal nature. This application is confidential. Only VDH staff and the CHPG membership committee will see your full application. The full group will see your application without your name attached to it.

Historically, CHPG has not included executive directors of organizations that receive or apply for HIV prevention funding from VDH to prevent conflict of interest or the appearance of such. In 2018, the by-laws were updated to allow executive directors on a case-by-case basis.

The by-laws do not explicitly outline criteria for allowing executive directors to serve to allow for flexibility, but the intended purpose was to be inclusive of agencies with limited staffing. Please make your case for why the committee should consider your appointment to CHPG.

(For example: I am the executive director of a new community based syringe exchange program in far southwest Virginia. While staffing has grown from 1 FTE to 3 FTEs in the last 6 months, I am the only full-time employee. The other 2 FTEs are 4 part-time outreach workers who staff our mobile units. While I would love to have an outreach worker on CHPG in the future, doing so at our current staffing level would be disruptive to providing services. I also hope to recruit a community member who uses our services, but that will require trust and community engagement levels that our organization needs more time to establish.)

The CHPG meets six to eight times per year on alternating Thursdays and Fridays in Richmond. Transportation and meals are reimbursed. Lodging is provided for those residing more than 25 miles from Richmond. Due to COVID-19, meetings have shifted to monthly, 2 hour meetings from 9-11 AM on a Thursday or Friday until state travel restrictions are lifted and it is safe to meet in person. Regular attendance is expected whether we meet remotely or in person. Can you commit to this meeting schedule and make arrangements to be away from work or home?
